I visited Caru cu Bere last week and had a great evening with a beautiful girl. The food and entertainment were excellent, I ate sarmale, (the national dish) cabbage leaves stuffed with mince, served with with polenta and sour cream followed by papanasi cu dulceata, doughnuts with sweet cream cheese and hot jam.
The atmosphere was wonderful, friendly staff and traditional dancing.

For 2 of us with main courses, dessert, wine and sambucas to finish it came to a very reasonable 140 Ron.

HIghly recommended, so much so that I went back for lunch the next day and had smoked sausages with bean ragout. 1 litre of homemade lemonade for just 39 Ron.

Oh, I did have those doughnuts! They were delicious. I'm not a huge fan of sour cream (I know, shameful), but the jam ones were ace!

:) Carul cu bere it's a good place to eat in Bucharest (if you're a foreigner and you want to get a taste of Romanian cuisine). Your friend has recommended exactly what he was suppose to, so that you get a taste of our food (btw I am Romanian :)).
However, I have to say the Italian influences are actually near to zero... Polenta is something everyone is doing..(we all had corn flour and we were poor..so polenta was the best choice) and we don't actually grow olives..It's just a new habit let's say :).
You should have tried the "sarmale" - the cabbage rolls they are delicious, and the pudding: "papanasi" - some kind of doughnuts made with cottage cheese (but still sweet) and served with sour cream and jam :). Maybe next time.
